I’m about what feels good…
In a new mini-series I’ll be asking both the buyers and sellers of Onanon a few interesting questions about their style, shopping habits and what the world of secondhand means to them. But first I thought I’d kick off answering some of them myself so you know a little more about me.
How would you describe your style in three words?
Unfussy, practical and comfy.
How has your approach to style or shopping evolved over time?
When I was younger I wanted to shy away from trends, even at secondary school I didn’t conform to the the uniform of shirt, tie and burgundy pullover, instead choosing to wear all black and somehow got away with it! Now I’m much more about what feels good, rather than trying to be different.
What inspired you to start shopping secondhand?
It started when I was 15 and my older sister was at art college, so we became quite alternative in our style together and would scour the charity shop for secondhand DM’s, old macs and big baggy jumpers. Since then, apart from a period through my 30’s when the high street became my go-to shopping place, I’ve always bought secondhand clothes.
Do you have a favorite brand you love finding secondhand?
Toast. I always feel very happy when I find a good piece at a bargain price!
Why do you choose to sell your clothes instead of donating or discarding them?
I could never throw anything away - even old t-shirts that are so well worn become my cleaning rags! I’m a sucker for saving everything or grading it to be recycled. I do still donate some clothes to the charity shops, and other homeware stuff too, and also support them more by buying from them.
What would you tell someone who’s curious about selling their clothes, but isn’t sure where to start?
Start with one piece. Pick something that you haven’t worn for a year. You might still love it but if you haven’t worn it because it’s too small/big or someone said something that stuck in your head and put you off it, then it will always stay unworn. Once your piece is sold and you’ve got money back in your pocket to buy something you will wear, trust me you’ll be hooked and want to clear our more!
