Why Secondhand Will Always Be My First Choice…

To kick off a new mini-series, I’ll be chatting with both buyers and sellers from the Onanon community, asking a few thoughtful questions about their style, shopping habits, and what secondhand means to them. But before we dive into their stories, I thought I’d start by answering a few myself - so you can get to know a little more about me and my own journey with secondhand.

How would you describe your style in three words?

Relaxed, practical, and comfortable.

How has your approach to style or shopping evolved over time?

In my younger years, I deliberately steered clear of trends - at secondary school, I even rewrote the uniform rules by dressing head-to-toe in black instead of the standard shirt and tie (somehow, I got away with it!). These days, I’m less about standing out and more about tuning into what feels good.

What inspired you to start shopping secondhand?

It all started when I was 15. My older sister had just started art college, and together we dove into a more alternative world of fashion. Charity shops became our treasure troves - we’d hunt for worn-in DMs, oversized macs, and baggy jumpers that told a story. That thrill never really left me. Aside from a detour through the high street in my 30s, secondhand has always felt like home.

Do you have a favourite brand you love finding secondhand?

Toast, without a doubt. Every time I find a beautiful piece at a fraction of the price, it feels like I’ve struck gold - quietly stylish, timeless, and made to last.

Why do you choose to sell your clothes instead of donating or discarding them?

Throwing things away just isn’t in my DNA. Even my most threadbare t-shirts find new life as cleaning cloths! I love the idea of giving things a second (or third) chapter - whether through reselling or donating to charity shops. It’s about valuing what we have and making sure it keeps moving, not piling up.

What would you tell someone who’s curious about selling their clothes, but isn’t sure where to start?

Start simple. Pick one piece you haven’t worn in over a year. Maybe it doesn’t fit anymore, or maybe someone’s comment made you fall out of love with it. Once you make your first sale and know that item has found a new home and put some money back in your pocket, it’s hard not to clear out more!
