Getting Dressed with Intention at 20
Meet Lexi, one of Onanon’s younger regulars, who gives us a glimpse into a wardrobe shaped by texture, longevity and clothes that carry a story. From inherited pieces to second-hand cashmere, her approach to dressing is thoughtful - intentional, tactile and built to last.
How would you describe your style in 3 words?
If I could stretch to four, I’d say confident and versatile in tone, whilst visually grounded and textured.
How has your approach to style or shopping evolved over time?
I think the biggest change in my approach to shopping has been becoming much more intentional. For example, when I was younger I mainly bought things because they felt on trend, without thinking about quality or whether they even worked with things I already owned. I essentially had a wardrobe of clothes I didn’t know how to wear. Now, especially because I’m only 20, I’m just working on building a strong base for my wardrobe, prioritising longevity, versatility and quality over quantity!
What inspired you to start shopping secondhand?
The reason I first started shopping secondhand was actually my mum. When I was about 16 I discovered her wardrobe (she was a fashion designer, so this was pretty revolutionary for me). Most of the pieces she’s passed down to me are my favourite things in my wardrobe, and I imagine will be for a long time. Beyond appreciating the style of her clothes, I also loved the fact that her clothes had a story prior to me, and I was giving them a new life. I think this is the reality for a lot of people my age - second hand shopping to find clothes from different eras, like the 90s.
What secondhand piece from your wardrobe do you reach for again and again—and why?
As boring as it might sound, my favourite clothing item in general is a good knitted jumper, although I’ve always struggled to find what I’d consider ‘the perfect one’. Because of that, something I reach for again and again is my COS chunky knit cashmere turtleneck that i found secondhand (which I consider the perfect jumper).
Do you have a favourite brand you love finding secondhand?
I wouldn’t say there’s a specific brand I look for when shopping second hand, i’m more drawn to material, texture and colour. Cashmere is always my favourite to find, and earthy tones like olive or brown are colours I look out for most.
What would you tell a friend who's never shopped secondhand before?
I would tell a friend that shopping second hand is just more exciting. I feel like shopping in this day and age can get pretty boring, things can feel too expected or repetitive. Shopping second hand is less predictable, you will come across brands or styles you’ve never heard of or seen before.
