From Secondhand to the High Street — and Back Again

For this mini-profile we’re talking to Claire about her secondhand beginnings, high street detours, and returning to shopping more thoughtfully. From art student days to investing in well-made staples, this is a story about dressing in a way that feels practical, personal and sustainable.

How would you describe your style in 3 words?

Casual, unfussy and practical.

How has your approach to style or shopping evolved over time?

I started shopping secondhand as a twenty-something art student, which was great fun. Then I fell a little into the high street trap, although I tended to invest in one good piece rather than buying lots for the same money. Brands like Diesel and Miss Sixty became my go-to.

Since becoming a mum - and perhaps because children’s clothes can be so expensive - I’ve returned to buying more secondhand for both myself and my daughter. I’ll still invest in new though for key pieces, but only if they’re well made and from brands I trust.

Do you remember the moment or reason you first started shopping secondhand?

It began in my late teens when I was a student. My style was quite grungy with a touch of hippy, so digging around in charity shops was part of the fun.

What secondhand piece from your wardrobe do you reach for again and again - and why?

A denim jumpsuit from Hush. It’s so comfortable and feels like it’s already lived a life - yet somehow it gets better every time I wear it.

Do you have a favourite brand you love finding secondhand?

I always get excited when I spot pieces by Toast, Oska, Finisterre or Hush - brands that are well made and, if cared for properly, have so much life left in them.

What would you tell a friend who's never shopped secondhand before?

Go in with an open mind and give yourself time. If you enjoy rummaging and love the thrill of finding a bargain, charity shops are perfect. If you prefer a more curated experience, I’d definitely recommend something like Onanon which makes it so easy.
