Still Loving the Thrill of the Hunt
Growing up in New Zealand, where charity shops are known as “op shops”, sparked an early love of hunting for those unique pieces for Stacey Gledhill, an Oxford based artist.
In this mini-profile, Stacey shares her favourite clothing brands and reflects on how her shopping habits have become more thoughtful over time, as she gradually winds down buying clothes online.
How would you describe your style in 3 words?
Relaxed, repetitive, touchable??
How has your approach to style or shopping evolved over time?
I have always loved the thrill of the hunt - finding hidden unique pieces. However I'm slowly winding down buying clothes online, because of the high risk of it not being quite right when it arrives. Now I'd rather choose carefully something long-lasting I have seen and tried on from a brand I love.
Can you recall when and why you first bought something second hand?
I grew up In New Zealand where charity shops are called 'op shops' - the 'op' is opportunity. I love this name! I must have been about 14 when I started buying things from op shops. I remember feeling excited to find something unique that I could buy myself.
Do you have a favourite brand you love finding second hand?
I love TOAST, Beyond Nine and Margaret Howell. But when it comes to second-hand I'm open to everything as long as its good quality... I'm going by the feel of the fabric the fit and the colour.
What inspires you to sell pieces you no longer wear?
I feel happy to think clothes I once loved can go to someone else - and I can get some pocket money toward something new for my wardrobe. It's a beautiful cycle!
What would you tell someone who's curious about selling their clothes, but isn't sure where to start?
If you have well-made pieces in great condition, it's easy to sell them on. Vinted is great to start out with. But to save the faff of photographing, packaging and sending I have really enjoyed being able to pass them to Onanon to sell!
